HARRISBURG — A day after his party lost its filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey is urging Republicans to stop complaining about election results.
“For four years we promised to reform the way the House of Representatives was elected and elected the Senate, and we’ve been in this fight all of these four years,” Casey told reporters Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “We’re still here.”
The Republican-led Senate has had two days to confirm presidential nominees and another week to confirm judicial and administrative nominees for the courts, in a process called up by the Congressional Review Act. Lawmakers can act by Monday evening to overturn President Barack Obama’s rule on the nominations as an “extraordinary step.”
“No matter if it’s this week on Friday, it’s time to stand up and be counted,” Casey said.
Senate Republicans had tried for nearly four decades to change Senate rules to curb minority leverage — and have been fighting a number of legal battles since 2011 to do so.
Casey said the Senate Judiciary Committee would be able to continue considering judicial and administrative nominees, while the House and Senate were able to move forward with major legislation.
“All the things we fought for — the ability to confirm and take executive action — are part of the law. What’s happened is that the law had changed,” Casey said. “This is the first time the judiciary branch of the government has been able to make a change in an area that it didn’t have to change.”
One of the things that annoys me the most about writing about music is the endless amount of music industry gossip and rumour mills. I want nothing more than to go on a blog post about some new album
