Trevor Bauer, a long time friend and longtime player/coach, will be an assistant head coach for a season. It’s a step up that could pay him about $1.2M and would push him above the $1.8M salary/cap hit for a head coach who does not. They have yet to say what other coaches they will have in the future.
Fats’ tenure as head coach has been full of turmoil, although it is still only the second full season of this four year deal. He’s lost a couple key starters, while a few others could leave as well. The team has won 6 of the last 8 regular season games without him and is 8-2 at home in the last 11 (including 2-0 at the end of the season). He was suspended for 6 games last season and the one in the playoffs, but they lost, 2-1, to Pittsburgh. If that story were true that would have been the first time they lost consecutive games since winning 6 games in a row in 2006.
The team lost two games to Edmonton. One of their four victories this season was over Boston. There were no other games on Fats’ resume that were that ugly.
Forwards: Aroldis Chapman, Jonathan Quick, Jeff Carter, Tanner Pearson, Loui Eriksson, Marian Gaborik, Chris Stewart, Jhonas Enroth, Andrew Ladd and Ryan Strome. Also, Mike Richards.
The Flyers don’t have a lot of money to spend (the cap is estimated to be around $71.4M) and probably have a good idea of what they will get from their future Hall of Fame players, but the forward spot might leave them exposed in free agency.
I know some people want to see Brayden Schenn on these list, but that would be a long shot too. We should probably just say goodbye.
Goalies: Scott Darling, Michael Leighton, Martin Brodeur, Jonas Gustavsson
We have some time before we have to see the salary cap figures for this group, but most goalies were under contract for 2013 or maybe early in the season. The group that is likely to see most of this cap exposure appears to be the group of goaltenders that made headlines in 2013, namely Strome, Gustavsson, and Enroth.
It’s hard to pick out a winner if we are limited to goaltenders
