The answer to that question would likely depend on how far down the hiring list you are. One of our clients is an editor at a large chain bookstore who has a great job as a writer and editorial coach for their e-book titles. Our competitor works in a small, boutique print-on-demand (POD) house, which is a challenging position for many editors. Some editors consider being a senior editor to be a good career; for other editors, being a junior editor is not a good career. In some parts of the business, it makes sense to take a few months of sabbatical and go out to an MFA programme.
What’s the hardest thing about being a writer?
Writers are notoriously difficult people and can make difficult employers — or even clients — nervous. Some editors will be willing to work with writers, but will be extremely hesitant to offer a position to you. It takes tremendous strength of character to endure a job you hate and then get to be the person responsible for making the project work. Some editors will take your work and try to fix it up — but others will leave you with a horrible, ugly paper — a big no-no for a creative person!
What’s the most rewarding thing about being a writer?
One of the best parts of writing for a living is that I get to travel the world and experience new places. There are so many things that a writer can create that I don’t know where to begin. I get to interact with writers and artists from all over the world and I get to meet some genuinely great people in my travels. I have been fortunate to meet my current editors from places like Australia, Switzerland, Canada, Indonesia, India, South Africa, France, Germany, Japan, China and Japan. The greatest joy for me is to see my clients, and I have so much respect for the work they do and love how they spend their lives and how they pursue their careers. The best part of this is that I get to share my stories with more people than I have ever been able to before — and that is enough to make my head spin!
