The point of this story is to say, even though we don’t think of our computers as having faces in our everyday lives, we still imagine our interactions with computers as having faces, for very different reasons. When we look at a person holding a device, we are not interacting with a “human face.” Rather, we are looking at a computer. We take it for granted that the computer has a face, because we assume that it must have a personality and a past, so that it can be expected to behave in a human-like way. We assume that when we look at the computer face, that it is a human-like face. This assumption is at the very heart of most computer games. But computer games don’t have faces in them. They don’t want to put their human protagonists in uncomfortable situations and have them be forced to choose between the consequences of their actions and the consequences of the consequences of their actions. Games with faces, whether we’re talking about The Sims , or Tetris, don’t tell us that what they do is any different than what a human protagonist would do. They don’t have any kind of personality to them. They don’t expect us to look at the character because they want to make us feel like we can control that character. They don’t expect us to be in an uncomfortable situation because they want to make us feel uncomfortable.

The computer does not care if it’s human. It’s just not that interested.

We don’t expect computers to ask us to do things we shouldn’t do. But we don’t expect them to ask us things we should be able to do either.
