How do they differ?
1. Pencil on paper
2. Pencil on watercolor board…for that’s just drawing.
What do you draw with, other than just drawing?
…my friends do drawings, but it’s not something that I like very much. (I’m sure it’s a good thing though…)
How do you make sure that all the parts of your drawing are correct?
That’s it. I know all of the proportions and shapes of the drawing, so that it’s easy to draw.
It’s been fun to speak about drawing and the process of making the drawings. What would you like to say to your readers?
To start, I want to thank you for taking the time to read my comic and I hope that you like it as much as I do.
In the late 1970s, two men in the U.K. were trying to improve the lives of children who had been deprived of adequate nutrition, but only by taking them out of feeding programs — and into what the U.K. would later dub “sustainable, organic” food.
In 1974, Andrew and Tony Whitehead — who had begun their careers as researchers at the British Institute of Nutrition together — were hired by the National Health Service to investigate the conditions at “closed feed-in” facilities, or “feed-in-the-cage” feeding centers, which had sprung up in places like Glasgow, Edinburgh and Cardiff, Wales, over the previous few years, where residents were separated from their homes and given small amounts of food and drink for months on end.
By that point, it was clear that there was something fundamentally wrong with that system. A report from the United Nations Children’s Fund in 1979 found the facilities to be, among other things, a source of “chronic neglect,” an “unresolved deprivation of a child’s right to development” and a breeding ground for “abuse and neglect.” But few seemed to have noticed at the time — the Whiteheads believed that just as importantly, that they had learned much from trying to improve their students.
The Whiteheads, who are now academics at Cambridge University, were also working to better themselves as individuals in other ways. They were, after all, making a big push in the U.K., trying to develop sustainable farming systems that had never before been attempted — and at the same time, trying to develop a program that wasn’t just about nutrition.
