The answer is that there isn’t one single element that is the true basis of graphite pencils; however, in different materials the common elements that are used to make pencils include graphite, lead, chrome, cobalt and beryllium. Different elements are used to make different types of pencils such as leaded and non-leaded pencils and in fact the most commonly used graphite is a graphite alloy, as shown below.
When a graphite has been manufactured via a process of making lead, all the atoms of the graphite have been stripped away. These atoms are then replaced with beryllium atoms, and the graphite thus created is called a graphite-containing alloy. The graphite is then hardened by applying heat and is called “hardened graphite”. Because of the fact that graphite is such an abundant element it is common to see lead pencils which are graphite-containing and non-lead pencils which are metal-containing. In other words, the graphitic components have a carbon atom on the end. Graphite cannot be heated, but the carbon atom is bonded into a graphite molecule, allowing it to be heated. These types of pencils are called “alloys”.

How do you build a pencil?
An early version of an ink pen had no moving parts. However in the late 1800s, William Peny-Werner combined a nib with a pen and made it a pen. These pen nibs were called pencils due to their use in writing. In the early 20th century, pen nibs used lead and were made of paper or cardboard; now they are made of plastic. Today’s pencils are made in several different methods and are called nibs. Nibs are produced in many different forms for different types of pens (pencils, pencils with gel, pencil with gel with a paint cover and the classic nib) and are different lengths.
Pen nibs are formed using one of two methods; a permanent stamping process or with a paint cover. A permanent stamping process involves the ink being stuck onto permanent metal plates containing a small amount of paint. This coating is applied in a way to allow the ink to flow easily.
