That’s a good question. There are a number of factors that go into drawing a drawing:
The artist (or artists) chose the drawing, for many there’s a strong relationship between the painting or drawing itself and the artistic intention.
The artist (or artists) took a great deal of time creating the drawing.
The artist (or artists) made a good deal of effort to make the drawing very attractive.
An artist or artist group is involved in the selection of the drawing, that’s probably why the drawing is considered a painting, drawing or something that belongs in the world.
The artist has developed the skill to draw well. If you are a visual learner, an artist has developed the ability to “see” and make a work of art well.
I like to think of my work as an extension of myself or as an homage to some aspect of me: my personality, my character, my sense of humor.
The artist may have created a drawing for me, an artistic expression of something I loved about them personally, something they experienced in some way or another. I don’t want to be the only reader of that art.
For someone new to comics or other artistic medium’s, comics come highly recommended: to read comics is to experience them, to see them. I hope I’ve been able to open your eyes in this way.
About the artist:
My name is Kevin C. Anderson. I live on Maui in Hawaii.
I’m the artist for The New Yorker of course, but over the years I’ve been involved in many other mediums – painting, photography, film, the visual arts. You probably think it’s only me, right? Well look again, I’m not the only one doing it, but it is the most common thing one sees on a comic page.
I’m an artist whose style is often the reverse of my own, in that I draw things that are the opposite of what’s normally done, and things you don’t see often on a comics page. This is just me doing it.
