A large-scale survey of the global sex trade has revealed that the total value of the worldwide sex industry is expected to exceed $1.65 billion in the next few years.
The report says the total number of people engaging in the sex trade as well as the volume of sexual transactions, including prostitution, are projected to be on a par at around 3.2 billion people by 2025.
The report, which was released by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), said the sex trade is most pervasive in sub-Saharan Africa and its largest regions are sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia.
In the five continents – Europe, North and South America, and Oceania – the total number of sex trade offenders in 2010 was around 8 million, with more than 150 crimes against humans per day in Europe.
The report said the report, published yesterday in The Lancet and International Journal of Population Economics, estimated that more than 1.1 billion people – 4 percent of the world’s population – were actively involved in the global sex trade in 2010, and that this figure is set to rise by more than 3.0 billion people by 2025.
“We estimate that the average global sex-trade offender is older than the average Indian person, and over one third of all global sex-trade offenders are in Africa,” the report said.
“There are also increasing reports from law enforcement officials and the press that a substantial increase in violence and exploitation taking place in the sex trade is now taking place in the countries closest to the source. These data are not hard to understand, because they show that global crime, corruption and organized violence taking place in sex markets and brothels around the world are not increasing even as demand for commercial sex is falling,” the report stated.
The report showed that there are 2.7 million sex-trade offenders in the UK, and the number is set to reach 5.4 million if existing trends continue.
This is followed by the US with 1.2 million sex-trade offenders, followed by Germany with 1.2 million, Indonesia with 1.1 million, Brazil with
