What conditions does Saffron need to grow?

Saffron seeds can grow in a wide variety of conditions, including, but not limited to, hot, hot humid, wet, dark, hot, dry and cool in combination. Saffron thrives in a humid environment.

Cold Saffron Seeds

Saffron is cold hardy and can grow in conditions that are generally too cold to live in, such as frigid conditions, low humidity, sub-zero temperatures on cold winter nights and above 80°F for a limited periods. Keep in mind that high humidity is necessary for proper growth. So, it is important to check it for freeze damage first. Saffron is a very poor conductor of heat, so as humidity decreases, the plant tends to dry out faster and grow weak, if not dead, with dry leaves. The soil should be moist and cool or warm (70°F to 80°F) although it is good to use a soil amendment if the temperature drops too low.

A cool, dry climate is very favorable, for Saffron, although it is best if a temperature is kept up around 55°F. This is about 15°F over the ideal range. Even after a temperature increase, many plants can still survive in these temperatures though they will still not produce as much as if the temperature was kept between 60 to 65°F. For this reason, you might want to consider using a seed-starting medium around 58°F and a soil amendment if temperatures fall below 55°. Saffron is also generally very sensitive to cold, so a warm temperature can still cause it to suffer a lot sooner.

Cold Saffron Seeds

The following is a list of seeds that are cold hardy, can be dried, and require only minimal care, but should be re-seeded after a freeze damage. As with other seedlings, don’t use hot Saffron because this can seriously damage the seed.

Blueberry Seed – Saffron’s flowers are small, yellow flowers that will only bloom once in a green color, and will only survive in hot, humid weather.
