We’ve long been a skeptic of “green jobs” as a form of employment. We’ve come to believe that the notion of “green businesses” merely represents a way of using taxpayer spending for a “green,” rather than “traditional” employment.
However, a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has put those doubts to rest.
BLS’ latest report on the “green-energy” sector concludes that there are indeed “green jobs”:
Over the past few years, as the United States has invested heavily in electric power generation—especially coal plants—and renewable energy technologies like wind and solar, new industries have popped up. These include companies such as solar-panel makers, solar energy services companies, energy efficient products manufacturers, and energy intensive construction in manufacturing of buildings and facilities. One such company is SolarCity Inc., the only U.S. publicly traded company that provides financing for solar-panel systems and other low-carbon systems, which is based on a business model of “renting” a roof in return for lower monthly electricity and property taxes. As solar-paneled rooftops proliferate in the United States, they have created thousands of jobs. And SolarCity, whose shares rose more than 7% on the news, is also the largest solar panel installer in the United States.
This might seem like a “green” employment story. After all, renewable energy companies like solar-panel makers, wind makers, wind energy services companies, and energy efficient products manufacturers are “green jobs” in that they are “clean” jobs. They’re not just jobs “created” or “created
